Lindamade hats!

Eeep! I desire these hats! I just love them, I want to put them on and go have tea lattes and read my books at an outdoor cafe, and eat delicious brownies steamy hot. I am happy fall is here though I will miss the warm bright summer, and summer skirts and bright colors, but these hats remind me that fall can also be colorful.

October 7, 1997

Last night I was reading an old diary from 2004, and really enjoyed the trip through time it gave me. I thought it might be fun to periodically post sections of some of my old journal entries here for a laugh.

October 7, 1997

"Dad let me practice backing the truck out of the driveway. It took me 20 minutes to back out the garage, down the driveway and park beside the house. I suck. I’ll never drive.

Tom called me around 9 tonight, and I was so relieved. I missed him so bad. He asked how I was, said our Homecoming pictures were here, and that he looked stupid in them. He said he didn’t want me to think he’d dropped off the face of the earth or anything like that. Jerk. I got really used to him and Justin P. always coming around. I'm going to miss it."

Lake Havasu

We had a whirlwind weekend with David's mom + Friends (Janice, Cherrie) at their vacation home in Bullhead AZ, where we spent most of our time at Lake Havasu. All day Saturday we played in the lake, and I got to ride a jet ski for the first time - I loved it it was so much fun! That night we went to Laughlin and gambled, I got to throw the dice at the craps table ( in the words of Ice Cube, and later of David-Michael, "shake-em up, shake-em up, shake-em up, shake-em!") and I had good ones on my last try, and David won $230, it was because of the magic of his new lucky gambling suit.
Bonus points and a special treat to whoever can identify David Michael's mom in this picture.

I got to see lots of interesting desert lawn ornaments,
and many interesting sights, including the London Bridge in Lake Havasu. Yes, it is the real London Bridge, brought over here to Arizona, and I think it is one of the craziest things ever. When you get up close you can see the bricks are all numbered so they could reasemble it.

The Great Book Giveaway

OK, from my book extractions, I've assembled this little group of books that I still love very much, but as i said, I've read many many MANY times and can read no more; or I loved them but know I'll not read them again and have to make room on the self for new favorites. So if you'd like one, let me know and I'll mail it to you, because I'd rather a friend enjoy these books than someone at a public library or the Goodwill. As a warining, Mr. Elwood Pudding suddenly belived himself to be a model and demanded to showcase some of the titles. I had to let him, so some of these are pictures of books + cat.

The Little House: An Architectural Seduction
Don't be fooled by bad photography, this book is actually blue and is quite small, it's lovely for a tiny shelf or carrying in a purse. Originally published as "La Petite Mansion" in French in 1879, this is a translation. The premise of this quick little story is that this French guy is going to woo a very proper lady into love by the sheer beauty of his home's architecture. Basically, it's him showing her room after room and each is more beautiful than the last until she's so overcome he'll hopefully have his way with her. Does it work? Don't ask me, lazy, you have to read it!! What makes this little book so especially awesome it that it's full of fold out pages of architectural illustrations, floor plans and maps of the grounds.

Geek Love
This book rules, it has conjoined twins in it. It's about a man who creates himself a family of freaks by subjecting his totally willing wife to chemicals and radiation while she's pregnant, and they have an albino dwarf, a flipper baby, the conjoined twins, and so on. The most of the book is about the kids growing up and running the circus and they're eventual and sad demise. It has great characters and is written vibrantly.

After Dark
This book takes place in Tokyo and is written in a sort of surreal style comparitive to the flow and strange choppiness / juxtapositions of a David Lynch movie. To say the least, it's gorgeous. The story follows 2 sisters, one staying up all night in a dinner encountering weird characters over the course of the night, and her beautiful model sister, who's been asleep for 2 months straight. This is by the same author as the Wind Up Bird Chronicle.

Now is the Hour
This book is a coming of age story of a teenage boy in rural Kansas during the 60's. It's so pretty, I love the author's style. It's about his relationship with very conservative Catholic parents, his older sister, his first girlfriend, and then meeting the love of his life, who's a much older Native American half-crazy man. The whole story is explaining radical changes in his life that lead to him leaving the farm for San Fransico to start a freer life. If you're not down with the gay, this book is not for you, because there is plenty of gay in there. I loved this book, it captures so well the intense love and frustration a teenager goes through with their parents as they are breaking away from childhood.

The Philosophy of Andy Warhol
He's so crazy, it's pretty much what the title says. Want to spend a while in his crazy mind? I did, it' cracked me up, I was laughin' big-time. Why is "THE" in all caps?

Lolita
This is very well the most lyrical beautifully prosed book I've ever read. If you don't know the story of Lolita, shame on you. It's about a dirty old man who falls in love with a little girl, and the whole thing is beautiful agony and pain and ruin. I get new messages every time I read it, and new feelings about the story the older I get.

Einsteins Dreams
I LOVE this book! Sigh... it's a fiction about when Einstein was writting the Theory of Relativity, he had dreams every night about worlds with different kinds of time. Each chapter is describing the kind of time in that world, it reads really quickly and pleasurably. For instance, in one world there are 2 kinds of people, those who live by the body clock and those who live by the mechanical clock. In another world, you live longer the higher up you live, so people build houses way up in the mountains on stilts as high as they can possibly get. In another world people live multiple lives, one for each possible choice that could be made in a decision.

That's it so far, this has sort of inspired me to do some synopsis of books I'm not getting rid of, just for the heck of it. Oh well, time to make dinner.

Exit Wounds

I bought this book yesterday at Barnes & Nobel on my lunchbreak : Exit Wounds. Here's a synopsis:

"Tel Aviv-–based Modan gives American comics readers a sharp sense of Israeli life in this brilliant and moving graphic novel. The story follows Koby Franco, a young taxi driver and lost soul, as he searches for his missing father, a man who long ago left the family and may or may not have been killed in a suicide bomb attack. Assisting and prodding him is Nuni, a young soldier who was romantically involved with the missing father. Modan takes her characters across Israel and through a variety of different Israeli social strata as the search progresses. Along the way it becomes clear that Koby's father's identity is in flux—he leaves all those that he loves, but touches on everything it means to be an Israeli: family man, soldier, religious practitioner and, perhaps, victim. Modan is a deft and subtle storyteller, and her meditation on Israeli identity and the possibilities of love and trust (between father and son, woman and man) are finely wrought. Her loose, expressive drawing is both tremendously evocative and precise—always enhancing the plot. The stellar combination makes this one of the major graphic novels of 2007." The author is a woman, and she lives in Tel Aviv and teaches a comics/illustration class. Sigh, I wonder if I'll ever accomplish anything illustrated again :(

It's rediculous that I think I can just keep buying books when I have limited space at home, they've been taking over my bedroom floor and other such areas. I got home last night and decided to clean out the living room bookshelf, and I'm getting rid of some great books I simply am not going to read again. I am thinking maybe I'll list the best one's here and if anyone want them, let me know and I'll mail to you. I'm in the middle of the last book of the Dark Materials trilogy, and then I have two titles from McSweeney's lined up and 2 big graphic novels as well. What I needs is a vacation to just bunk down and read read read....

Softies

Yay again for the MAIL!
I got my book long awaited in the mail from amazon.com today, Softies: Simple Instructions for 25 Plush Pals. Yes, I got it online for only $12 smackers. I yearn to produce squishy softie buddies and will have to begin excavating the craft room so as to find my sewing table in all the mess. It's piles and piles of paper and old records in there, as well as half the contents of my closet escaping onto the floor. But there are treats to make so I'll have to get inspired. For dinner tonight I'm making a fancy 3-cheese macaroni from Everyday Foods, but I could only find 2 of the cheeses at the market, so poo. But I will be making my own bread crumbs, and that's an accomplishment in itself.

Sunday was lovely, by the way, I did nothing but read all day long, until David took a nap and I slinked out at 4 pm to the Promenade and went shopping. I found a brightly colored long-desired tulip skirt from anthropologie that must have originally $80 at least and I snagged it for $18 at Crossroads. I'll post a pic when I wear it out. We made yummy dinner and had ice cream over old episodes of Freaks and Geeks, with Mr. Pudding in a family cuddle on the couch.

My Prom Date

Well, this Saturday night we attended a very fun party themed High School Formal. In preparation, David and I found him this amazing blue pinstriped suit at the Jewish Women's Counsel Thrift Store on Venice, with awesome red striped tie. It's Yves Saint Laurent and fit him excellently. It was a splendid time, with lots of dancing, and a really good group sing/dance to the weezer song Surf Wax America. I had a wonderful night with Christine and Amanda, and we reminiced about Lompoc High.

Near the end of the evening, David Michael turned into a sports newscaster, inspired by his suit tie and slicked back hair part, and went about asking "the hard-hitting questions" alternating with a Jehovah's WItness type bible salesman persona. What a great night, my feets are killing me.

Ciudad

We friends met up downtown at Ciudad after work on Friday: Agata & Anthony & Misti & Kristen & Anashe & of course the ever super-hot David Michael. If you've never been there it's lovely - the walls are all covered with cool abstract paintings, here's a shot of the ceiling.
They have a lovely happy hour menu and I had scruptious fish tacos and white sangria.

After the hour of happy, we trecked all up and down and around the Walt Disney Concert Hall looking for a Barry McGee exhibit opening Anthony fortold of. When we finally found it, we were tantalized by his grafitting sculptures and crazy bright patterned wall installations. It was colorful and lovely. All hipsters were out in full force, and I could only take it for so long though, boys ought not wear such tight pants.

Capital One

I have recently opened a savings account with Capital One. I have since received almost daily mail from them regarding said account, but yesterday took the cake. I got 5 individual letters in 5 respective envelopes. 3 of 5 were identical, confirming my address. What a waste of paper! Elwood, who is not environmentally conscious in the least, was simply tickled.
In more lovely news, I finally made it in to the Mood Designer Fabrics store on La Cienega and Pico - right where Pearl is. I was agog at the lovely fabric prints within, and bought some yards of this one here, I plan to make a skirt or top or handbag, or maybe a matchy matchy skirt and handbag! Wouldn't that just make you want to slap me?

We Love Oktoberfest

Last night David took me to my first ever Oktoberfest in the Alpine Villiage in Torrance - and it was the first fest of this year so it was a pretty special night. He and his David have been going since the beginning of time, and they are big time Oktoberfest fans. David is German, and takes special pride in this beer-drinking festival wich happens every weekend until the end of October. David got me a tiny stein, which was heavy enough for me, and I think holds half a liter. There were lots of men in lederhosen and peter pan hats with long feathers. I liked this very much. More with the dressing up, I say. I didn't drink all that much but I had a great time. There is a real German Oom-pa-pa band performing popular favorites you can sing along to like this little ditty:

"La-la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la-la
We love Oktoberfest!"
(Repeat several times.)

There is tons of dancing and lots of adults actually skipping down the rows of tables. This was a grand party, and I would like to go again. Christine and I mastered the chicken dance, and hope to make our own chicken hats in the future. All in all, Christine and I concluded, this was a very happy, wholesome dorky time. I love the general unabashed enthusiasum of all in attendance, of all ages, perfectly overjoyed to prance, chicken dance, and hug and sway and sing out loud. What follow are a series of blurry drunky picutres of our night.

Largo - Jon & Fiona

Last night Christine invited me to join her at Largo to see John Brion perform. He plays there every Friday and the shows sell out almost immediately, so it was really exciting that she got a reservation. To learn about the genius that his Jon Brion check him out here, he's worked with a million people and created music for I Heart Huckabees, Magnoila and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The show was spectacular, he moves from the drums, the piano keyborad and guitars, recording loops of each instrument and playing the loop back while playing the next instrument until he's built this very complex song, and then plays another istrument over it all while singing. I've never seen such creativity pour out of one person. He had 11 different kinds of guitars on stage, and moved through them picking whatever he needed for the next song. And he had no set list, he just took requests screamed from the crowd, and when they asked for a song he sort of knew but didn't know that well, he'd just sort of figure it out, on ALL instruments. Amazing, and even more than that, everything he played was potent with creativity and full emotion. I was really blown away. At the end, Fiona Apple came out and sang to 4-5 songs, and that really made the night spectacular. We paid $15 to get into this little place and saw the most amazing show with a Fiona Apple appearance, and we were sitting 5 feet from her. She has a truly beautiful voice, and it's so warm and rich and alive when it's happening right there spontaneously in front of you. She is so tiny, and such big, sweet, bold sounds come out of her. I was so glad I go to go and hear and see all that incredible talent.

Pie

Last night I was very industrious.
I came home and baked my first ever apple pie. I used my grandma's recipe to make the crust pastrys and they were tricky but the pie came out so good, I was really proud of myself. Then I did a mountain of dishes then I made cous-cous chicken vegatable stirfry for David Warren and myself. I was so tired after dinner I fell asleep. Warren is staying with us for a weeks so I've stocked up on food, and the fridge is brimming with meals waiting to be made.

Concluding Labor Day...

So after the Saturday night visit to mom and dad's hotel, we met them again in the morning for Crepes at Cafe Crepes at the 3rd Street Promenade. I had my favorite delicious Nutella + Banana crepes, flavor gallore! Who should be seated at the table right across from ours but Adam Sandler and his wife and baby. It's weird seeing Adam Sandler hanging out and holding his baby and eating crepes for breakfast, but now we know he has excellent breakfast taste.

That evening we went to a fun BBQ at Joel's with a suprise appearance by Mr. Warren himself, who was thought to be already settled down in New York now. He's in town for a couple weeks tying up the last loose ends and will maybe be staying with us for some of that time. It was a good party, but sadly my fourth beer was a bad decision, and i felt ill. The tropical heat of the night didn't help, and we spent a fitful night in our oven-like apartment, unable to get cool enough for peaceful sleep.

Today we went to another BBQ hosted by Mark and Tiffany at her folks house. We lounged in the pool all day and has some very rousing games of pool badmitton, though after hotdogs, my tummy was displeased prolly due to the beer of the night before, and I did not get back in the pool as the games continued into the afternoon. We saw a slideshow of their trip river rafting in Sacramento, and trecked on home to our slightly-cooler-than-the-night-before oven. It was a quick weekend, and I already long for the next one.

Loews Hotel

Mom and Dad were in Santa Monica this weekend for dad's cousin Claire's wedding. They were put up at Loew's Hotel were David and I visited them to make use of the swimming pool while they wedding-ed. The pool area was filled with Europeans on vacation with thier little European chil'ens. We sunned on deck chairs and I ventured into the the Euro-child fraught waters. Then when the sun was fading we went to explore Mom & Dad's room and change to have dinner. I discovered Dad's large moon-boot like shoes. Then we discovered these guys on the balcony below us. They were gargantuan snow beasts - the poofiest poofs I've ever seen. I took their pictures and they barked at me.
Before walking down to the Promenade for dinner we examined the contents of the night dresser drawer, and in addition to the Holy Bible we found a copy of the Teachings of the Buddha. Only in California we decided. But more shocking, this large toenail that I've circled in red! Gross!!!!!
